Kodak Licenses Patents to IMAX; Sued by Fujifilm for Patent Infringement

October 17, 2011 - Eastman Kodak Company announced that it licensed about 100 patents related to laser projection to IMAX Corporation. The licensing deal, worth about $50 million in upfront fees and additional royalties, will help Kodak raise cash in an attempt to improve its financial condition.

Kodak is still seeking to sell 1,100 of its patents related to digital imaging. Since 2004, Kodak has only posted one annual profit.

Complicating matters, however, is the fact that Fujifilm filed a patent infringement lawsuit against Kodak two days before the IMAX deal. Fujifilm alleges that Kodak infringes four of its patents in the area of digital imaging.

Kodak also has a high-stakes patent case pending before the International Trade Commission (ITC), where it and Apple have countersued each other.
