September 6, 2012 - Hologic Inc., a Bedford, Mass. company that develops diagnostic, imaging and surgical products for women's health, lost a patent lawsuit it was involved in against London-based Smith & Nephew. The jury in the case awarded the plaintiff $4 million in damages for lost profits.

Smith & Nephew sued Interlace Medical Inc. in 2010, and the company was subsequently acquired by Hologic in 2011. Hologic was compensated by the former Interlace shareholders for potential liabilities.

The patents-at-suit were U.S. Patents 7,226,459 and 8,061,359, which the jury found were infringed by Interlace's MyoSure Tissue Removal Device.
