GPC Licenses DTL’s Key Cell Phone Patent to Personal Communications Devices (PCD)

Two Regional Wireless Service Providers Also License DTL’s Patent

Suffern, N.Y., August 3, 2010 − General Patent Corporation (GPC), a leading patent licensing and enforcement firm, announced today on behalf of its subsidiary, Digital Technology Licensing LLC (DTL), that it has licensed DTL's cellular communications patent to Personal Communications Devices LLC (PCD).

In addition, two regional cellular service providers – Illinois Valley Cellular of Marseilles, Ill. and Leaco Rural Telephone Cooperative of Hobbs, Minn. – took licenses for the patent.

DTL owns U.S. Patent No. 5,051,799 (the ’799 Patent) titled “Digital Output Transducer.” The technology covered by the ‘799 Patent addressed Adaptive Multi-Rate (AMR) codec and other cellular communication standards, assuring backward compatibility of cell phone handsets and base stations. The ‘799 Patent also had applications in Bluetooth and other wireless devices.

"We are very pleased to add Personal Communications Devices as a licensee of the DTL Patent, and add Illinois Valley and Leaco to the regional carriers that have licensed the ’799 Patent," said Kathlene Ingham, GPC's Director of Licensing, “and we look forward to licensing the remaining companies in the industry.”

General Patent Corporation represents DTL in the licensing and enforcement of U.S. Patent No. 5,051,799. DTL brought patent infringement lawsuits against Verizon Wireless, Cingular Wireless, AT&T Mobility (Cingular Wireless is now known as AT&T Mobility), T-Mobile, Sprint and other companies. Equipment manufacturers Nokia, Ericsson, Sony-Ericsson, Samsung, Casio Hitachi Mobile Communications, Plantronics, Motorola and LG Electronics have licensed the DTL Patent. Lawsuits are still pending against Kyocera, Sprint and other companies.

Personal Communications Devices and Illinois Valley Cellular were not defendants in a lawsuit. Leaco Rural Telephone was a third-party defendant in DTL’s lawsuit with Kyocera in U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York (CV 09-2567).
