March 14, 2013 - A jury found that Nintendo infringed a patent belonging to Tomita Technologies and awarded the plaintiff $30.2 million in damages. The patent-at-suit relates to glasses-free 3D displays.
Sejiro Tomita, a former Sony employee, presented evidence that he had met with Nintendo R&D engineers in 2003 to demonstrate a prototype of his technology. The patent, which he also filed in 2003, is entitled "Stereoscopic image picking up and display system based upon optical axes."
Tomita originally asked for over $292 million, or $9.80 for each Nintendo 3DS sold.
