February 13, 2014 - GE Lighting settled with CRS Electronics, ending a patent infringement lawsuit that began in December 2012.
GE alleged that CRS infringed two U.S. patents, 6,799,864 and 6,787,999, related to LED lamp heat sink designs and methods of replacing existing lamps with these designs. CRS agreed to take a license under the two patents.
February 10, 2014 - Canon filed 11 patent lawsuits in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York against 18 companies who manufacture, distribute and/or sell toner cartridges that Canon claims infringe nine of its patents.
February 3, 2014 - The Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation (WARF) filed a patent suit against Apple, claiming that Apple's newest A7 processor infringes U.S. Patent No. 5,781,752, entitled "Table Based Data Speculation Circuit for Parallel Processing Computer." WARF alleges that Apple's iPhone 5S, iPad Air, and iPad Mini with Retina Display each use Apple's newest A7 processor and thus infringe the '752 patent.
January 24, 2014 - The U.S. Supreme Court issued its ruling in Medtronic, Inc. v. Mirowski Family Ventures, reversing a ruling by the Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit (CAFC), which hears appeals in patent lawsuits.
January 22, 2014 - A jury in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Texas found that with the push notification services in Android, Google infringes a SimpleAir patent. The Google Cloud Messaging (GCM) and Android Cloud to Device Messaging (C2DM) services, which send instant notifications to applications such as Twitter, Gmail and Facebook, were found to infringe SimpleAir's U.S. Patent No.
January 22, 2014 - A group of cable companies, including Charter Communications and several smaller companies, banded together to sue the Rockstar Consortium in U.S. District Court in Delaware for violating agreements to charge only Fair, Reasonable and Non-Discriminatory (FRAND) royalty rates for the Nortel patents. Rockstar had agreed at the time of its massive patent purchase in 2011 to honor the FRAND agreements made by Nortel regarding its patents.
January 15, 2014 - Medtronic Inc. was ordered to pay over $392 million to Edwards Lifesciences Corp. when it lost a patent infringement lawsuit concerning patents on a new heart valve device. Medtronic already paid Edwards $84 million in initial damages last year related to a patent case that is still pending.
November 26, 2013 - Stratasys Inc., the North American subsidiary of Stratasys Ltd., brought a patent lawsuit against Afinia, a division of Microboards Technology LLC. Stratasys alleges that Afinia infringes four of its patents related to 3D printing, and seeks injunctive relief and damages.
December 9, 2013 - In the course of its two patent lawsuits with Samsung over the design of the iPhone, Apple expects to pay over $60 million to its outside counsel, Morrison & Foerster.
December 6, 2013 - Online auto parts retailer Parts.com received some bad news on December 4 when a California federal judge dismissed its trademark infringement lawsuit against Google and left only one infringement claim standing in its suit against Yahoo.
